Starting as far back as the late 1920s railroads began to piggyback over-the-road truck trailers on general service flatcars for customers. General Service flatcars were equipped with a combination of rub rails, jack connections, integral or detachable bridge plates, and 5th wheel mounts, and could carry either pairs of short trailers or a single 40 trailer. The Atlas 50 Flatcar with Trailers is typical of the general service flatcar conversions that ran from the 1940s through the 1970s.
